For everyone who loves B&B's, there's another who hates them. Maybe it's because some B&B Inns verge a little too close to Grandma's house territory with doilies under the lamps and that weird old house smell. I hate that smell!
But not all B&B's have to spark bad childhood memories. No, these inns border on hip, trendy even romantic. You won't be thinking of grandma when you sit in front of the fireplace!

OVERVIEW: Just five romantic bungalows surrounding a courtyard. Humble exterior opens up to exquisite luxury once inside.
WHAT'S COOL: Top notch linens and beddings, cool kitchens with fruit and milk and OJ in the fridge, and fresh breads and pastries hung on your door every morning. Bungalows 313 B&B is a great alternative to a standard hotel.
BEST FOR: Separate cottages create a private ambiance, perfect for honeymoons, romance, and couples wanting to feel more like locals than tourists.
LOCATION: Close enough to the plaza to walk, but tucked away in a residential neighborhood where it's nice and quiet.

OVERVIEW: Lovingly restored historic Craftsman house with only three guest rooms, period piece antiques decorate the inn without becoming too frilly.
WHAT'S COOL: Hidden Oak B&B has a pool and hot tub, great porch for morning breakfast, wine and cheese reception in the afternoon.
BEST FOR: Friendly and social vacationers. The small size means you'll most likely bump into the other travelers and the innkeepers. It's sort of like staying at a friends house.
LOCATION: A few blocks away from the plaza.

OVERVIEW: Zen-like gardens and modern rooms set the tone for these seven private suites. The Cottage Inn and Spa offers large suites with patios. Romance is a given with the large in-room jacuzzi tubs and warming fireplaces.
WHAT'S COOL: Full kitchen in the Mission Suite for the gourmet chef in you, and couples massages in the garden. This really isn't your grandma's house!
BEST FOR: Resort lovers who don't want the giant resort but still want the amenities and style.
LOCATION: A short walk to the plaza, walk to dinner and around the town.

OVERVIEW: A traditionally styled B&B with the antiques and dark wood, The Cooperage Inn is actually just two large suites in what once was an icehouse, brewery and wine storage building.
WHAT'S COOL: Super sized suites that feel more like a small apartment, one with a cool retro kitchen. The two suites are joined and can transform into one gigantic suite for larger groups. Art studio run by the owners downstairs.
BEST FOR: Those who are not freaked out by Victorian styling, those looking for lots and lots of space in a location close to the plaza.
LOCATION: Very close to the plaza, great location.

OVERVIEW: A country farmhouse on the outside, a cool and contemporary B&B on the inside. Three luxurious suites, all updated like a model home, not a doily or country loving furnishing in sight. My kind of place!
WHAT'S COOL: Auberge Sonoma is so close to town that it's easy to walk to the Farmer's Market, each suite has a gourmet kitchen if you want to cook up some of your finds. Washer and dryer, modern furnishings, it's better than home.
BEST FOR: Sophisticated vacationers who want the simple country life of sitting on the porch with a glass of wine, but also want modern furnishings when it's time to go inside.
LOCATION: Killer location near the plaza.

SPRING 2012: I love visiting Sonoma in the Spring. The vines are starting to bud, the bright yellow mustard plants, and it's cheaper! Lovely!
